Project Description
This project seeks to address an imbalance in tourism expenditure in Victoria. Out of the $30 billion expenditure by tourists in Victoria, Melbourne alone accounts for 63.3%, leaving only $11 billion for all of regional Victoria. Also, despite an increase in international tourism, domestic tourism is declining in Victoria.
The purpose of VicInsights is to increase domestic visitors’ expenditure in regional Victoria by encouraging visitors to stay overnight. This will help in improving the regional economy of Victoria in two ways:
- Increasing direct tourism-based expenditures on accommodation, food, and tickets
- Indirectly increasing service sector employment through increasing tourism in the area.
VicInsights will initially focus on Geelong and the Bellarine Peninsula. This is a good region on which to test our approach, because of its currently low tourism expenditure combined with a good range of visitor attractions.
Target Audience
We are targeting Victorian families with kids less than 10 years of age. This category of visitors tends to spend the most on accommodation and food. According to a survey on attitudes to travel by Australian families by the Real Insurance Company, it was estimated that taking kids away for seven days adds up to $1518 on average to the total cost of a holiday.
